We were delighted by the huge increase in the amount of entries we received for the 2008 Youth Awards. It seems that these awards, now in their third year, have really captured the imagination of young people and those who work with them. The range and innovation of work being carried out is fantastic and the judges had a really hard time selecting the winners. The Youth Awards ceremony was held on the 1st of May and attended by more than 400 people from across Northern Ireland. It was hosted by Cool FMs Pete Snodden and entertainment was provided by Battle of the Band winners Shotgun and Samba Drummers from Wandsworth Community Centre. Once again, we appreciated the support of the Department of Education and Health Promotion Agency. Young people within the age range of the youth service make up nearly 1/3 of the population of Northern Ireland and around 35% of those will be actively involved in some form of youth service. |

WINNER
Youth in Community Reconciliation Project
Corrymeela, Ballycastle
|
This year, the highest accolade was awarded to The Corrymeela Community - Youth in Community Reconciliation Project. This was an innovative youth-led project delivering a personal and social development programme to marginalised young adults, 18-25 years old. The programme focuses on community relations/good relations issues and is based on the principles of Equity, Diversity and Interdependence (EDI). As part of this project participants organised a conference based on contemporary issues, relevant to their peers. Based on a workshop model some of the choices they offered included the themes of suicide awareness, sexuality, bullying, ASBO's, global and disability awareness. This provoked thought as well as discussion, avoiding skimming over the difficulties faced by today's youth. |
