NORTHERN IRELAND YOUTH AWARDS 2009

INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Newtownabbey Youth Exchange Group

JOINT WINNER
Newtownabbey Youth Exchange Area Youth Office

This has been an ambitious youth exchange programme involving Northern Ireland, Germany, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia over 3 years. The themes are 'conflict/culture and leadership exchange', and young people in Northern Ireland hosted this group in 2007 and in 2008 visited Bosnia and Croatia. Each country presents their experiences of conflict and the impact this has on communities. The programme includes cultural visits, planning, conflict resolution workshops, production of 'Year book' and the creation of a DVD. Plans for the 2009 exchange programme to Germany are well advanced and young people have gained many very positive experiences and skills.

Ballybeen Action Project

JOINT WINNER
Ballybeen Action Project -
Euroscola/Citizenship

'Young people as European Citizens' has been the theme of this exciting project where 25 young people from the rural Ards peninsula and Ballybeen estate took on the tough challenge of preparing for and attending discussions at a one-day Euroscola event. Those participating increased their knowledge of the European Parliament and gained a wealth of knowledge as future voting citizens about the law, consumerism, environmental issues, and the economy. This 6 month programme has had a lasting impact on these young people who are now being offered further opportunities through a youth support package that includes youth work placements and accredited youth work training.

RUNNER UP
Northern Ireland Children's Enterprise - Serbian Exchange

This youth organisation, already involved in supporting community relations, provided a group of young people (19-25 yrs) the opportunity to relate their own experiences on a wider scale. They planned an exchange programme and visit to Serbia and found that this enabled them not only to have a greater understanding of the Serbian culture and history of their conflict, but also established a working and personal relationship between these two groups that will be valuable for the longer term.
