NORTHERN IRELAND YOUTH AWARDS 2010

INTERGENERATIONAL AWARD

WINNER
Irvinestown Youth Club

This project involved ten young people and ten senior citizens over a two month period.  They designed and made a large canvas containing images of their home town now and 50 years ago.  Working in teams of four they researched local history, obtained old photos and interviewed local community representatives.  At the end of each session, the group help a discussion and cooked a hot meal reflecting the old style recipes and modern tastes.

RUNNER-UP: Cathedral Youth Club, Long Tower Youth Club, Brandywell and the Fountain's 'Past the Jail and Down behind the Fountain' Project
This cross-community project with participants both young and old, catholic and protestants, was entitled 'Past the Jail and Down behind the Fountain'.  They gathered up information about their local area, in relation to games played in the past, the workplace etc.  A high quality book was compiled with the information that had been gathered.   


RUNNER-UP: The Bridge & Include Youth
Along the interface area of Woodstock and Lower Ravenhill there have been growing tensions amongst the community due to anti social behaviour and interface unrest. The Bridge in conjunction with Include Youth carried out a 12 week intergenerational programme with 10 young people and 8 older residents, to address issues such as anti-social behaviour, bridging the gap, opening doors for communication and breaking down mistrust, thereby improving relationships between young and old of the area.

RUNNER-UP: Morton Community Centre/Sloan Court Befrienders Group
Local young people and young people from India, China and the Philipines from Morton Community Centre after schools club and the befrienders group came together to learn about lives and cultures from each others generation. They interviewed each other and recorded the information as well as teaching each other new skills such as sewing, baking making up 'yarns' and singing.
